NEED ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH MATERIALS FOR HOTEL DEPARTMENT AT VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN BENGKULU CITY

This research aimed to find out the English materials, especially topic and sample
materials needed by students in the Hotel Department in Bengkulu City. It used
mixed method that combine quantitative and qualitative methods. A total of 51
active students in Hotel Department were asked to fill out a questionnaire to see
the material students needed. In addition a total of four alumni and four English
teachers from SMKN 7 Bengkulu city and three stakeholders became resource
persons in interviews to obtain material sample data needed by students of the
Hotel Department. This research used questionnaire and interview as research
instruments. The results of this research shows that the topic materials ( Hotel
industry, front office, housekeeping, laundry, food and beverage, creative and
entrepreneurship products) are considered very maximally needed by students in
Hotel Department at SMKN 7 Bengkulu city. The most of subtipics in Hotel
Department is very maximally needed. In addition Sample materials (definitions,
classifications, hotel industry structures, forms, front office structures, work areas,
housekeeping equipment, linens, laundry cleaning materials, food processing,
plating, garnishes, creative product and entrepreneurship) are considered not all of
which need to be taught to students in Hotel Department. As a suggestion, the
government especially the curriculum developer and syllabus design, to revise the
teaching materials or materials according to the needs of students in vocational
schools, it is suggest to design materials in accordance with the knowledge needs
and demands of the world of work for students at vocational high schools,
especially at the Hotel Department.
