Abstract
This study aims to find a number of classroom interaction patterns between the
English teachers and students in Class XI of SMAN 1 Bengkulu and the teachers’
methods for manipulating the interaction in the classes. It was designed as a
qualitative research in which the data were obtained via observation and
interview. The data were also analyzed by applying Ur theory consisting of five
classifications of classroom interaction patterns, such as Teacher (T), Teacher-
Teacher (TT), Teacher-Students (TS), Students (S), and Teacher-Students (TS).
The results indicated that there were four of five interaction patterns that occurred
in Class IX at SMAN 1 Bengkulu during the pandemic. The patterns comprised T,
TS, T and SS. In accordance with observations which were carried out as many as
eight meetings, as many as six meetings showed that the interactions were still
dominated by the English teachers. Contrarily, the students only listened to the
material presented without participating in conveying opinions. Even one meeting
took place in a passive way. However, there was one meeting which showed the
activeness of the students by delivering ideas in classroom, supported by the
qualified ability of the teachers in delivering many English topics. In addition, the
interaction pattern of SS happened when the students obtained motivation by the
English teacher to read the dialog in the book reference. Furthermore, the teachers
also manipulated the class situation by arranging classroom to keep its conditions
being comfortable and influenced on students’ high concentration while studying.
The further method was to apply communication media, such as computers and
smart phones equipped with an internet network. However, the lack of interaction
during the pandemic was affected by a limit on the number of students, nearly
50 percent. It brought about communication activities in the classrooms did not
run optimally. To sum up, there were four interaction patterns showed in
teaching and learning conducts during pandemic at SMA 1 Bengkulu. But, most
interractions were still dominated by the English teachers with the interaction
pattern of Teacher-Teacher (TT). Therefore, the students are suggested to keep
being motivated to attend the teaching and learning process. Then the other
suggestion is that the further reserachers can apply Ur's theory or others to
discuss about interaction patterns comprehensively in face to face teaching and
learning activities in normal situation.
