Abstract

This research consistently highlights the crucial role and impact of textbooks in
balancing taught skills and determining the practice materials students use. The study
aims to identify higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in the reading comprehension
questions of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture's English textbook
"Bahasa Inggris Work in Progress for Grade X SMA/MA/SMK/MAK," Utilizing the
higher-order thinking skills theory from the revised Bloom's Taxonomy by Krathwohl
and Anderson, the study focuses on skills related to analysis, evaluation, and creation. This study uses a qualitative approach to analyze data, employing checklist tables and
analysis cards as instruments. The findings reveal that the most commonly used HOTS
aspect in the English textbook's reading tasks is analysis (C4) followed by the evaluation
category (C5). Based on the research findings, it was discovered that this book contains
limited content focused on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). However, its
implementation needs further review. Although the textbooks are thorough, teachers
must adapt and enhance the material to cater to diverse learning styles and to enhance
students' understanding and engagement with the provided content. For some types of
questions, the HOTS content is insufficient for grade 10 students across all schools. Many schools do not offer additional or background knowledge to help anticipate and
implement these skills effectively. Therefore, it is highly recommended that the
government, as the publisher of this book, provide solutions and review its
implementation in schools throughout Indonesia. Keywords: English Textbook, Reading Text Questions, High Order Thinking Skills.
