Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the types of prepositional phrase found in
abstract of thesis written by English Department Students undergraduate of
Universitas Bengkulu. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The
population of this research was 75 undergraduate thesis abstract of English
Department Students graduate in 2022. The data were 30 abstract out of 75 abstract.
The instrument used in this research was table checklist. The researcher analyzed the
data of prepositional phrase by applying the theory of Frank (1972). The result
revealed that there are 263 adjectival prepositional phrases and 188 adverbial
prepositional phrases. The research findings show that Adjectival Prepositional
Phrases are the most dominant type used because of their essential function in
explaining the methodology and context of the research in detail, while Adverbial
Prepositional Phrases are used less frequently because their function is more limited
to modifying verb, adjective or adverb phrases. In conclusion, the use of adjectival
prepositional phrases in academic writing is a common strategy to meet the needs for
detail, clarity, and formality in information delivery in explaining concepts, objects,
or ideas to the readers. .
