Abstract
This research aims to find out the strategies used by English teachers in teaching
speaking skills, especially in teaching speaking skills to students in the Hospitality
Management class at SMK Negeri 7 Kota Bengkulu, as well as to find out the
difficulties faced by teachers in implementing the strategies used in teaching
speaking skills. This research uses qualitative research methods. The subjects of
this study were three English teachers who taught in grade 10. Data were collected
through observations, interviews, and documentation in the form of lesson plans
(Teaching Modules) to collect data and analyzed using thematic analysis according
to Braun and Clarke (2006), which includes familiarization with the data,
generating initial codes, searching for themes, reviewing themes, defining and
naming themes, and organizing them. The research findings were validated using
triangulation techniques. The results showed that the three teachers used the
strategies of Role Playing, Task Completion, Information Gathering, and
Information Transfer. In practice, teachers face challenges in implementing the
strategies used in teaching speaking skills. The challenges are student factors and
environmental factors. The results of this study show that although teachers have
tried to implement various strategies, challenges related to student factors and the
learning environment are still the main challenges in teaching speaking skills to
students.
