Abstract
This study aimed to describe the process of teaching speaking skills at SMP Negeri
5 Kota Bengkulu. Speaking skills held an important role in students' daily lives.
The focus of the study was on describing the speaking teaching strategies used by
teachers and the implementation of these strategies in the classroom. The subjects
of the research were teachers of grades 8 and 9 and only 2 classes in each study.
The data presentation method in this study was qualitative, as it focused on
providing descriptive accounts. Data were collected through observation
checklists, interviews, and documentation. checklist observations were carried out
twice on each teacher. The result of the study showed that teachers employed
various strategies in teaching speaking, such as discussion, brainstorming, picture
narrating, and picture describing. In practice, teachers adjusted the strategies to the
material taught at each session. The reasons for implementing these strategies were
to make students more active in class, overcome boredom, increase motivation to
learn English, attract their interest, and reduce their fear of speaking.
