TEACHERS' DIFFICULTIES IN TAILORING MATERIALS FOR TEACHING ENGLISH AT HOSPITALITY VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

This study aimed to find out the difficulties faced by teachers in tailoring English
teaching materials for hospitality vocational classes at SMK Negeri 7 Kota
Bengkulu, as well as to find out how teachers overcome difficulties in tailoring
these teaching materials. This study used a qualitative research method. The
subjects of this study were five English teachers who taught in the hospitality class.
Data were collected through interviews and documentation in the form of lesson
plans (Teaching Modules). Interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis
according to Braun and Clarke (2006), which includes familiarization with the data,
generating initial codes, searching for themes, reviewing themes, defining and
naming themes, and organizing them. The findings of research data from interviews
and documents were validated using source triangulation. The findings showed that
English teachers at SMK Negeri 7 Bengkulu City experienced significant
difficulties in tailoring teaching materials to the specific needs of the hospitality
industry, namely teaching materials regarding hospitality vocabulary and teaching
materials for procedures in hospitality. This was due to the teacher's educational
background which was a general English teacher so it was not linear with the world
of hospitality. The results also showed that although teachers had difficulties in
tailoring teaching materials for hospitality classes, teachers at SMK Negeri 07 Kota
Bengkulu had shown some quite innovative efforts, such as by discussing with
students who have done internships, collaborating and discussing with hospitality
people, and utilizing technology. This is conducted by the teachers to overcome
their difficulties in tailoring teaching materials that are relevant to the world of
hospitality work.
