Abstract
The research was a classroom action research and aimed to describe the
implementation of Student Team Achievement Division technique and how
far the Student Team Achievement Division technique could improve
students’ speaking ability. The subject consist of 16 males and 14 females at
eleven grade students’ of Madrasah Aliyah Darussalam -Kepahiang in
academic year 2016/2017. The instruments of the research were speaking
test, observation checklists and questionnaire. This research focused on
speaking ability. The research was conducted in two cycles that consisted of
three meetings in each cycle. For the first meeting, there were some trouble
that researcher found like students un-confidence or students considered
that speaking English lesson was bored and not interesting. There were four
steps in each cycle namely plan, action, observation, and reflection. But the
final result after did this technique was satisfied. The result of observation
checklist on the students and teachers showed that Student Team
Achievement technique increased students’ speaking ability.(a) There were
the positive response when the students learning speaking, not only the high
level student interested in oral practice but also low level student become
enthusiastically in English speaking class.(b) there were 61% students who
passed the passing grade at the end of cycle 1 and increased to 78,33%
students at the end of cycle 2. It is suggested for the further research is
performed with different subject and focus of the research.
