ABSTRACT
2)
This study examined the students’ attitude toward commands and requests used by the English teacher. The subject of this research was the 21-students at the Language Study class of SMAN 2 Bengkulu Town academic year 2006-2007. A survey closedquestionnaire was employed to gather the data. The questionnaire was consisted of 51 items of 17 Commands and Requests dimensions developed by Hughes (1986). Each dimension was discussed by three aspects of the cognitive, affective, and connative. This study employed the descriptive statistics of the frequency, percentage, and mean calculations. The results indicated that the students’ attitude toward their English teacher’s command and request was positive. The students, however, confirmed that they had very negative attitudes toward the use of the emphatic form in the teacher’s command and the use of frustration expression in their teacher’s request. Further, the mean calculation showed that the teacher’s request form had the highest value. The theoretical and practical implementation was discussed in the study.
