AN ANALYSIS OF PRESUPPOSITION ON PRINCESS DIANA’S CHARACTER IN THE CROWN SEASON 5 (2022) WEB SERIES ON NETFLIX

This study analyzes the presuppositions used by the character Princess Diana in the
Netflix series “The Crown Season 5” (2022). The purpose of this research is to identify
the types of presuppositions found in her utterances and analyze their meanings within
the context. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and applied George
Yule’s (1996) theory of six presupposition types. The data included 601 utterances
spoken by Princess Diana throughout the season. The results showed that all six types
of presupposition appeared with a total of 546 instances found in 389 utterances.
Existential Presupposition was the most dominant type (49.45%), followed by Lexical
(18.86%), Structural (15.38%), and Factive (13.00%). Meanwhile, Counterfactual
(1.83%) and Non-Factive (1.47%) were the least frequent. It can be concluded that
presuppositions in Princess Diana’s utterances are highly context-dependent, and play
a significant role in building Princess Diana’s character by showing her feelings of
isolation and rebellion in the story.
