Abstract

This study aimed at finding out whether the students taught by STAD achieve significantly higher score than those who were taught by conventional method at grade VIII of SMPN 4 Kota Bengkulu. This study employed a quasi experimental research design. The sample of this study is the second grade students of SMPN 4 Kota Bengkulu consisting of 64 students for experiment and control class. The instrument employed in this research was writing test which was aimed at measuring students‟ writing ability. The finding of this research showed that the students taught by STAD achieve significantly higher score than those who were taught by conventional method at grade VIII of SMPN 4 Kota Bengkulu. STAD seems effective to be applied in teaching writing descriptive text as it can improve the students‟ score in writing. Key words: Writing Ability, Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD)
