Abstract

This research entitled “An Analysis of Illocutionary Acts on Barack Obama’s Farewell Speech”. This research was a descriptive quantitative analysis that discusses about illocutionary acts in Barack Obama speech. In analyzing the script, this study used theory by Yule (1996). The data in this research were Barack Obama utterances and script in his farewell speech. The purpose of this analysis was to find out the types, and functions of illocutionary act in the script of Barack Obama farewell speech. From the analysis it was found that four types of illocutionary acts were used in this speech. Types of illocutionary act used in the speech were representatives 50.6%, followed by directives 28.4%, expressives 16.1%, commissives 4.9%, and the last is declarations 0%. The most dominantly used illocutionary acts was representatives. Based on the result, the researcher found that the event of this speech was the factor affected Barack Obama used representatives more than the others. The event of this speech is farewell speech.
