Abstract
The type of this research is Descriptive Qualitative research. It is aimed to find out the types of maxim were obeyed and violated by the main characters in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” movie. The object of this study is the “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” movie directed by Tim Burton and written by John August. According to the result of data analysis the researcher gets the results that there are 38 conversations used by the main characters in the movie, among Charlie Bucket and Willy Wonka with other characters, from 38 conversations found, there are four types of maxim obeyed by the main characters in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” movie by Roald Dahl (61.18%) such as Maxim of Quantity (19.35%), Maxim of Quality (24.73%), Maxim of Relevance (30.11%), and Maxim of Manner (25.81%). The researcher also found maxim violation (38.82%). Besides that, the researcher also explains the reason why the main characters violated the maxim. Absolutely, the frequent maxim that occur in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” movie is obeyed the maxim (61.18%) and maxim violation (38.82%). In this movie, the researcher concluded that the main characters more obeyed the maxim than they violated them so the communication could run well.
