Abstract
The aim of this research was to investigate code-mixing and code-switching behaviours of the English Education Study Program Students on Instagram Posts. The study employed a mixed- method design. The subjects were sixth-semester English Education Study Program Students (EESP) on the Instagram posts. The instruments consisted of observation checklist and interview. The data were taken from January- June 2020. The code mixing data were classified based on Muysken (2000) and code switching were based on Poplack (1980). The reasons why the students mixed and switched codes of code-mixingandcode-switching were analyzed by following Hoffman (1991). The findings show that, first, the EESP Students applied Insertion, Alternation and Congruent lexicalization types of code-mixing and all types of code switching on Instagram Posts namely ; tag code switching, inter-sentential code switching, and intra-sentential code switching. Second, four parts of speech were found in code mixing, namely: verb, noun, adjective, and pronoun. Third, The reasons why the students mixed codes on Instagram Posts, were talking about particular topic, expressing group identity, repetition used for clarification, and being emphatic about something. Fourth, the sixth functions of code mixing were talking about a particular topic, being emphatic about something, expressing group identity, There has been no comprehensive explanation if the EESP student’s language behaviours are internally and or externally motivated.
