Abstract
This research aimed to find out the dominant students’ speaking strategies in speaking for discussion class applied by English Department students and the reason why they applied the strategies. This research used mixed method as the research design. The population of this research were the third semester students of English Education Study Program at University of Bengkulu in 2020 academic year. This research used total sampling means all the third semester students be the sample of this research. The data were collected by using questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was adapted from Gao et al (2009). The result from questionnaire showed the dominant strategies applied by the students were Making Connection and Challenging Others’ Views strategies. The result from interview showed the students reason in applying strategies were Helpful, Easy, and Suitable. The most dominant reason stated by the students was Helpful.
