Abstract

This study focuses on the scaffolding strategy used by the certified English teachers in teaching English to second grade students (VIII.8) at Junior High School 1 South Bengkulu. There were 2 teachers in this study, consisting of class VIII B and VIII G teachers. This study aims to explain types of scaffolding used by the teachers. This study was a qualitative research. The data were taken by observation checklist and taking audio recording of teaching activities in the classroom. The data were transcribed and analyzed in the following steps: data managing, reading and memoing, describing, classifying, and interpreting. Based on the results of the analysis, the researcher concluded that the English teachers under the study in teaching English for VIII grade students at Junior High School 1 South Bengkulu covers two types of scaffolding in the teaching and learning process. The types found were modelling and contextualizing. Two teachers used the example of material, using the simple language, and involving students imitating and re-enacting the examples given, and discussing material related to student life. This finding indicates that the two teachers used scaffolding in teaching English to help students in achieving their understanding.
