Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out high school student’s intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in face to face English learning in Bintuhan city, Kaur district. This study employed the quantitative design. The subjects of the research were 57 grade-XII high school students. The instrument of the research was, a questionnaire, consisting of 50 items. The questionnaire was distributed to the subjects directly to the subjects and was collected in class after it was completed by the students. The results of the research show that in terms of intrinsic motivation related to learning of the four-language skills, the student’s intrinsic motivation is at the highest level when they learned listening skill. Furthermore, in term of extrinsic motivation in learning English, it was found that the student’s extrinsic motivation was at the highest stage when they practiced reading skills. It could be concluded that the student’s intrinsic and extrinsic motivation changes based on what language skills they are practicing in class. However, this conclusion may not be decisive and final as the data were only collected by one instrument. Therefore, further research would be helpful to reveal a more comprehensive picture of the student’s motivation. Key word: Motivation, Intrinsic, and Extrinsic
