Abstract

In academic and social life, speaking is a basic language skill which is very important to be mastered. In the process of learning and teaching language at school, teachers must always enrich their learning strategies and media that are relevant to the current situation and latest technology. The purpose of this research were to find out 1) the improvement of the English speaking skill of class VII-A students at MTsN 02 Bengkulu City through English learning videos on the YouTube channel, 2) the factors that influenced the improvement of students' English speaking skill in class VII-A at MTsN 02 Bengkulu City. The research of a Classroom Action Research method involving 36 students of class VII-A at MTsN 02 Bengkulu City was analyzed by using quantitative and qualitative data analysis technique in order to investigate the increase of students’ ability and the factors that influence the improvement of students' English speaking skill. The instruments used were field notes, observation sheets, lesson plans, and English speaking tests. Based on test results, the use of English learning videos on the YouTube channel was able to increase the percentage of students who met the success criteria from previously only 17% in the baseline data to 87% at the end of the study. Thus, the use of English learning videos on the YouTube channel improves the students' English speaking skill. In addition, the factors that affected the improvement of students' English speaking skill are also influenced by the students' own factors, namely students’ learning motivation and students’ activeness to participate in teaching and learning activities.
