Abstract

By Grice's (1975) cooperative principles theory, this thesis aims to identify the types of observe and Non-observe maxims that occur in the utterances between Jimmy Fallon and Taylor Swift in conveying their ideas/messages to achieve ideal communication on the Jimmy Fallon Tonight Show. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data was obtained from a script of the conversation that occurred between Jimmy Fallon and Taylor Swift, Interview with Taylor Swift on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Youtube Channel, which was aired on November 26, 2022. Based on the data obtained, there were 291 data observing maxims, and 106 data that broken the maxims. The findings prove that in the conversation between Jimmy and Taylor maxims are more frequently observed than broken. The most observed type of maxim is the maxim of relevance, which is 46.4% of the data. However, the type of maxim that is the least observed is the maxim of manner, which is as much as 8.24% of the data. Meanwhile, the type of maxim broken that commonly occurs is flouting maxim of manner, which is as much as 50.94% of the data. However, the type of maxim broken that was found the least was infringing a maxim by 1.9% of the data. It seems that this shows that the participants have good communication skills. This happened caused the interview run smoothly and friendly. However, on the other hand, broken of maxims cannot be avoided for various purposes and reasons.
