Abstract
The objective of this study was to find out the types of questioning strategies applied in English teaching by 4 English teachers at SMPN 21 Kota Bengkulu. This study applied mixed method, which is a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, data was collected using questionnaires and interviews. The population of this study was 4 English teachers and 140 eighth grade students, and the samples were 4 English teachers and 60 eighth grade students. The results of this study showed that types of questions used by English teachers in teaching English lessons is display and referential questions as learning strategies, this is in accordance with the results of the questionnaire, English teachers A and B have similarities in the used of questioning strategies in the classroom namely 50% for display questions and 50% for referential questions. This is also supported by the results of interviews with the English teacher. While the others C and D are likely to use referential questions, this is in accordance with the results of questionnaire with a frequency of 50%, but on display questions teachers C and D with a total frequency of 42.8% agree to use displays and 7.2% disagree with using display questions. Moreover based on questionnaires to students found that 83% of students prefer to the use of referential questions. It can be concluded that English teachers at SMPN 21 Kota Bengkulu used both question strategies in classroom interactions, namely display and referential questions, only had a slight difference in the frequency of used display and referential questions. Therefore, for future research, researcher suggest conduct research in various schools, not just in one school. The researcher also suggest conduct research on teacher question strategies with a larger number of samples so that the types of teacher questioning strategies used are more diverse and confirm.
