Abstract

The purpose of this study to see and determine the improvement of students' speaking skills in English lessons using the Talking Chip Technique in grade 9. The participants in this study were 32 students from class IX.A consisting of 14 boys and 18 girls. This study uses Classroom Action Research (CAR). Data obtained through observation and speaking tests. To determine which students succeeded in improving their speaking skills based on a standard score of 78. To analyze the data, the researcher used two steps, namely assessing students' speaking skills using quantitative data and calculating student scores. The results of the study showed an increase in students' speaking skills. In the initial data obtained through the observation process carried out by researchers, students who managed to get standard scores were 17 students or 53.125%, while students who failed to get standard scores were 15 students or 46.875%. Then based on the problems in class, researchers and teacher collaborators carried out cycle 1. In cycle 1, the results of students who managed to get a standard score of 78 or ≥ 78 were 18 students or 56.25%, while those who did not. Success is 14 or 43.75%. Because these results were not optimal or had not reached the target indicators of success, the research continued to cycle 2. In cycle 2, it was founded that 19 students or 59.375% succeeded in obtaining scores according to the standard score, while 13 students or 40.625% did not succeed. After the speaking tests (cycles 1 and 2) were completed, researcher and collaborator teacher can concluded that the Talking Chip technique could improve students' speaking skills and make students dare to speak English based on the research that had been conducted.
