Abstract

This mixed-method research aimed to find out the learning strategies of the student interpreters of the University of Bengkulu use in learning English. The participants of this research were 9 student interpreters of ACQUIN Accreditation of the University of Bengkulu. The data were obtained from Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire adopted from Oxford (1990) and semi-structured interview. The data from questionnaire were analyzed by using Microsoft Excel to find the most frequently used by the participants, while the data from interview were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The results from the questionnaire revealed that the participants used metacognitive as the most frequently strategies used with mean score of 4.38, followed by cognitive (4.07), compensation (4.00), affective (3.91), social (3.78), and memory (3.49) as the least. The data gathered from the interview revealed that all participants mentioned used all classifications of the strategies which supported the result of the questionnaire. It also found that the participants perceived fun learning activities such as watching movies, videos, and listening to music as effective strategies. The results indicated that the student interpreters of the University of Bengkulu may have applied self-learning management and be more likely to do something rather than memorizing or remembering. English students are suggested to know and make sure of the appropriate strategies to make learning more effective. Keywords: Language Learning Strategies, Student Interpreter
