Abstract
In various forms of communication, many speakers tend not to observe the maxims or cooperative principle that can avoid them from miscommunication, misunderstanding, and misinterpretation, for certain reasons. This is known as non-observance of maxims and also occurs in communication in TV programs. This study aimed to identify the types of non-observance of maxims and revealed which participants fail to observe the maxims more frequently in one of TV programs: Good Morning Britain interview clip that discussing the headscarf ban. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The data in this study were utterances delivered by the hosts and guest stars. The data were analyzed using the theories of Grice (1975) and Thomas (1995). The results show that all five types of non-observance of maxims were found in the program. The most frequent type was infringing of maxims, while the least was suspending of maxims. Additionally, the participants who failed to observe the maxims more frequently was Saira Khan, the guest star who agreed with the ban on the use of headscarf, followed by Piers Morgan as the host, Hanna Yusuf who did not agree with the ban on the use of headscarf, and finally Susanna Reid as the host. In conclusion, the types and frequency of non-observance of maxims found was different from entertainment programs such as talk shows, drama series, or movies. This may result from the social factors of the program where the setting is non-scripted and broadcast to the public, the topic is sensitive related to headscarf ban, and the guest stars are both Muslim women. It is suggested for the next researchers to examine more source of data or video with longer duration to gain more comprehensive findings about the non-observance of maxims in soft news tv programs. Keywords: Maxims, Non-observance of maxims, Good Morning Britain
