Abstract

This study aims to find out the use of Interactional Metadiscourse Markers in the introduction section of Undergraduate thesis of Universitas Bengkulu and Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. 15 Undergraduate Thesis students of Universitas Bengkulu and 15 undergraduate thesis students of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia were the corpus of this research. In addition, introduction section is one of the most important part in an article because it provides an overview of the topic being discussed and presents the writer's main arguments or ideas. This research employed a mix method. The results of the study show that the five categories in the interactional metadiscourse markers; hedges, boosters, attitude markers, self-mentions, and engagement markers are used by the students of Universitas Bengkulu and students of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia in the introduction section of undergraduate thesis. The highest frequency used of interactional metadiscourse category is hedges markers. This finding implies that writers are more likely to use this marker to build the possibility through the text while by using possible or possibly is indicated the writer's decision.
