Abstract

By Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory, this thesis aim to identifying the types of positive politeness and negative politeness strategies used in the characters of the animated movie Barbie as The Princess and The Pauper. This research uses qualitative descriptive method. The data was obtained from the movie script. Based on the data obtained, there are 87 utterances used on the characters. The findings showed that in the conversation between characters, there were more positive politeness than negative politeness. The most used type of strategies is positive politeness strtategies, which is 59 utterances. However, the least used strategies are negative politeness, which is 28 utterances. This can happen because the storyline of this movie is about royal life but not fully formal so that the closeness between characters in this movie is not so strict but still creates boundaries between them. Keywords: Politeness Strategy, Movie
