Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out whether there was an effect of word relationship technique toward students’ English vocabulary mastery resulted from teaching by using word relationship technique and non word relationship technique. The population of this research was all the second year students of SMP N 19 Kota Bengkulu that consisted of 155 students. The sample were 80 students that taken from two classes. The students were divided into two groups, the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group received treatment by using word relationship technique, while the control group was taught by using conventional technique. The pre-test was given to the two groups before giving the treatment. The mean score of the experimental group was 57.25 and control group was 54.8. The t-test was used. From the t-test calculation of pre-test result, t-obtained was 1.26 and t-table was 2.02. Therefore, the t-count was smaller than the t-table (1.26<2.02). It means that there was no significance between the two groups in vocabulary mastery before giving the treatment. After giving the treatment, post-test was given. The mean score of experimental group was 76.85 and control group was 60.05. In the hypothesis t-obtained was 2.40 and t-table was 2.00. Therefore t- obtained was higher t-table (2.40>2.00). It means that there was a significance difference between the two groups. It can be concluded that word relationship technique gave positive effect toward students English vocabulary mastery of SMP N 19 Kota Bengkulu.
