Abstract

The title of this research was The Effect of short story in improving students’ vocabulary mastery a study at the second year students of SMPN 7 Bengkulu. The objective of this research was to find out the differences in students score and whether the students interest was improved or not, after being conducted a treatment by uses short story and handbook. The instrument was a vocabulary test. The result from short story was satisfying. The data obtained from the pre-test and the post –test score were analyzed by using the t-calculation. From the pre-test result, the t count was smaller than the t – table (0.629 < 2.021). thus it meant that trere was no sinificant difference between the two groups. The post – test result showed that t count was bigger than the t-table (2.82 > 2.021). Thus, the alternative hypothesis (H1) was acceted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. In other words, there was a significant difference between the mean score in the pre-test and the mean score in the post-test. It can be concluded that the treatment of short story technique was effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery.
