Abstract

The hydrolysis of crude palm oil using hydrochloride acid and H-zeolite catalysts had been carried out. The purpose of this research was to know the influence of hydrochloride acid concentration, the amount of H-zeolit, and the mixture of hydrochloride acid and H-zeolite catalyst on the concentration of free fatty acid (FFA). Palm oil was hydrolyzed at 120 o C for 4 hours in a reflux jar. The variation amount of hydrochloride acid catalysts was (0,3 mmol HCl/g palm oil; 0,6 mmol HCl/g palm oil; and 0,9 mmol HCl/g palm oil), and the variation amount of H-zeolit catalysts was (2%; 4%; and 6%). The concentration of FFA was determined using titrimetric method. The FFA component of hidrolized product was analyzed by gas chromatography. The result shows that the increasing of hydrochloride acid concentration increases concentration of FFA. The highest concentration of FFA 10,25% was resulted by hidrolysis of hydrochloride acid 0,9 mmol HCl/g palm oil. In hydrolysis by using H-zeolite catalyst and the mixture catalyst of hydrochloride acid and H-zeolite, increasing amount of catalyst has no effect on the concentration of FFA.
