Abstract

The objectives of this research were to investigate the students’ filler in Language Teaching Seminar Presentation, to find out the dominant fillers type uttered by the students in Language Teaching Seminar Presentation, to locate, if there is any, the differences of fillers used by male and female. The subject of this research was the seventh semester students of English Department. It consisted of twenty students or 50% of the population derived from different gender, which were purpose sampling. The data were collected by recording the fillers used by the student in presentation. The recordings were transcribed into data chunk. The transcript were selected into categorize and classified into fillers type and classified male and female fillers type. The result of this research showed that the most dominant filler used by the student was Filled Pause. It was used almost a half from the total fillers in the presentation. It showed that many students used this to be able to control of a conversation while thinking of the next utterances. This filler type also indicated the students’ uncertainty of their own speaking skill. This filler type was followed by Explicit Editing Term and Discourse Marker which appeared one fourth from the total number of fillers. The students also used other kinds of fillers such as; yeah, Ok, what we call and repetition which appeared almost a half from the total fillers in the presentation.
