Abstract

Unsatisfying students’ biology concept understanding and inquiry skills have been a problem in biology teaching at SMPN 11 Bengkulu. The purpose of this classroom action research was to improve teaching strategy by implementing 5E Learning Cycle model at the school as an effort to increase the students’ biology competency. The subjects were three biology teachers and students of VIIB, VIIIC, and IXB classes. The study was carried out on three lesson topics, except in IXB class. Improvement of the model implementation was done on each lesson topic which was consisted of several lessons. In each lesson, planning, action, observation, and evaluation-reflection as steps of classroom action research were conducted. Students’ worksheets, teaching-learning observation guidance, and tests were used as instruments to collect data. The result of this study showed that the implementation of 5E Learning Cycle model was getting better after improvement action based on reflections. During the lesson planning, teachers generally faced challenges on the development of student worksheet which should have inquiry characteristics. Teachers also described facing some difficulties in the explanation and elaboration phase of the 5E Learning Cycle model, especially in the first implementation. Improvement in students’ concept understanding was not always showed in every consecutive cycle, especially on VIIIC students. However, students’ inquiry skills such as data collection skill, data analysis skill, and conclusion drawing skill were increased after several lessons.
