Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of folktale and non folktale texts in improving students’ reading comprehension. The population consisted of the second year students at the SLTPN I Pondok kelapa, academic year 2006/2007. The instrument was reliable (r=0,9). The design was a quasi experiment. Involving an folktale class and non folktale class. The folktale class was treated with folktale texts for six times and the non folktale class was treated with non folktale texts. A pre-test was given to both classes before treatment, while post-test given after the treatment. Pre-test analysis showed that there was no significant difference in score average between the two groups (t count = 0,88< t table =2,00). In contrast, post-test analysis showed that there was a significant difference in score average between both groups (t count = 3,8>t table = 2,00). In conclusion, the folktale texts improved the students’ reading comprehension. It was thus recommended in teaching reading.
