Abstract

This research aims to 1) identify how reciprocal teaching technique can improve students’ reading ability of narrative text, 2) identify how reciprocal teaching improve students’ interaction in the reading class of the narrative text. This research was conducted at SMAN 9 Bengkulu. The subjects of this research were the second grade of IPA SMAN 9 Bengkulu in the academic year 2012/2013. This study was undertaken August - October 2012 through classroom action research. It consisted of two cycles which included four meetings. There were two types of data in this research; they were qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data were obtained by conducting direct observation in the classroom and interviewing some students related to their activity in learning, holding regular meeting with the collaborator to find out students’ improvement. Checklist, interview and field notes were also used in doing this research. Quantitative data were the students’ score that had been gotten from pre-test and post test. The results of the study show that; 1) reciprocal teaching can improve students’ reading ability of narrative text. The improvement of students’ reading ability can be seen from the percentage of students who already passed of pre-test is 40%; the test in the first cycle is 56, 7% and the percentage students that who already passed of the post test in the second cycle is 83, 3%, and 2) reciprocal teaching technique which is implemented in reading class can also improve students’ interaction, confidence, and motivation in classroom activities. They become more active, enthusiastic, enjoyable, and more brave to give their ideas or opinion in using English. So, it can be concluded that reciprocal teaching can be improve students’ reading ability of narrative text and also improve students’ interaction in reading class of the narrative text when the reciprocal was implemented.
