Abstract

Export demand for high-fixed carbon charcoal is increasing. The requirement for fixed
carbon charcoal for Japan is 70% - 85% and for the UK a minimum of 80%. Using a
conventional kiln, our preliminary research shows that the fixed carbon value of Acacia
mangium Willd branches was 66%. The fixed carbon value is directly proportional to the
temperature during charcoal making. In order to increase the combustion temperature, we
designed a charcoal kiln which has two combustion sources. The name of the charcoal kiln is
Pyrolysis Double Burner (PDB). The Giam Siak Kecil Wildlife Reserve is surrounded by a
buffer zone. The buffer zone is an industrial plantation forest area. Species planted in the
plantation include A. crassicarpa and A. mangium. One of the functions of the buffer zone is
a place for the community to take their necessities of life, so that they will not damage the
wildlife reserve. It is hoped that the community around the wildlife reserve can use the
branches from the plantation forest for charcoal production using the PDB.
