Abstract
The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of GIST strategy
toward students reading comprehension achievement at SMP Negeri 1
Kepahiang. In this research the Quasi-experimental method was implemented.
The population was the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kepahiang in the
academic year 2018/2019 and two classes were chosen as sample which consisted
of 60 students. This research used two groups, the experimental group which was
taught by using GIST strategy and the control group which was taught by
conventional technique. The research instrument of reading comprehension test
was used. The data obtained were analyzed by using t-test formula. It was found
that the result of post-test t-count (2.915) was higher than the t-table value
(1.672) and the value of sig. p (2-tailed) is 0.005 less than 0.05. The finding
showed that there was a significant difference scores between the students who
were taught by GIST strategy and the students who were not taught by GIST
strategy. The students who were taught by GIST strategy get significantly higher
scores than who were not taught by GIST strategy. It means GIST strategy is an
effective strategy to teach reading comprehension in exploring recount text.
