Abstract

Due to COVI-19 Pandemic, the teaching and learning process for listening
courses at the English Education Study Program of the University of Bengkulu
was implemented online. This condition is required students to change their
habits in learning from offline to online modes. Therefore, this research aimed
to investigate students’ perceptions and their obstacles during the teaching and
learning process in online listening courses. This sequential explanatory mixed
method involved 68 third-semester students filling out the online questionnaire.
Moreover, the semi-structured interview was carried out to uncover students’
obstacles in online listening courses. The data were analyzed by using
descriptive statistics and an interactive model. The results showed that students
gave positive perceptions on online listening courses viewed from five aspects
of perception; the perceptions on the lecturers’ roles, listening courses,
benefits, difficulties, and interactions. Moreover, some obstacles were still
faced by the students in online listening courses, namely technical problems
(e.g., the electricity went out), internet connection/networks, and internet data.
In conclusion, students still enjoy following online listening courses during the
COVID-19 Pandemic although they still face some obstacles. These findings
also imply that online learning courses are effective during the COVID-19
Pandemic.
Keywords: COVID-19 Pandemic, listening courses, listening skills, online
learning, students’ perceptions.
