Abstract

In academic and social life, speaking is a basic language skill which is very
important to be mastered. In the process of learning and teaching
language at school, teachers must always enrich their learning strategies
and media that are relevant to the current situation and latest technology.
The purpose of this research were to find out 1) the improvement of the
English speaking skill of class VII-A students at MTsN 02 Bengkulu City
through English learning videos on the YouTube channel, 2) the factors
that influenced the improvement of students' English speaking skill in class
VII-A at MTsN 02 Bengkulu City. The research of a Classroom Action
Research method involving 36 students of class VII-A at MTsN 02
Bengkulu City was analyzed by using quantitative and qualitative data
analysis technique in order to investigate the increase of students’ ability
and the factors that influence the improvement of students' English
speaking skill. The instruments used were field notes, observation sheets,
lesson plans, and English speaking tests. Based on test results, the use of
English learning videos on the YouTube channel was able to increase the
percentage of students who met the success criteria from previously only
17% in the baseline data to 87% at the end of the study. Thus, the use of
English learning videos on the YouTube channel improves the students'
English speaking skill. In addition, the factors that affected the
improvement of students' English speaking skill are also influenced by the
students' own factors, namely students’ learning motivation and students’
activeness to participate in teaching and learning activities.
