Abstract

The present research investigated (1) the grammar learning strategies (GLS)
frequently used by the English Tadris students of Tarbiyah and Tadris Faculty of
UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu, (2) the reasons for using the most and the least
strategies, and (3) the differences in using GLS based on the grade level of the
students. This research was conducted by using mix method that involved 477
participants. The instruments of the research were questionnaire and interview. The
data gathered from questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively by using SPSS 26
and the data gathered from interview were analyzed qualitatively. The result
revealed that the grammar learning strategies frequently used by the students were
the metacognitive strategies which were interpreted as the strategies often used.
Meanwhile, the least strategies used by the students were the affective strategies
which were interpreted as the strategies sometimes used. The reason for using the
metacognitive strategies as the most strategy used acquired students to manage and
regulate their own learning. However, the reason of using the affective strategy as
the least strategy used by the students was the students had low strategies regarding
perception, emotional and motivational in learning grammar. Moreover, regarding
the differences in using GLS based on the grade level of each semester had different
preferred strategy. The students of each semester selected the metacognitive as the
frequently strategy used with different tendency of the indicators. The conclusions
were (1) the frequently strategy used by the students was metacognitive strategy;
(2) the reason of using the metacognitive as the most strategies used were to assist
them to learn grammar easier, faster and enjoyable; (3) every grade level of students
had different tendency of the metacognitive’s indicators.
