Abstract

The aim of this research is to use Think-Pair-Share as technique to improve the
speaking skill of IX grade students in SMP Negeri 2 Kota Bengkulu. This
research design was a classroom action research. The actions were carried out in
two cycles. Subject in this research was 31 students in the IX G class consisting of
14 girls and 17 boys. The researcher used three instruments namely: field note,
test, and interview transcript. The data analyzed through qualitative and
quantitative analysis. The findings of this study showed the use of Think-Pair-
Share as teaching technique was successfully improved students’ speaking skill.
The result of the mean score in students’ speaking accuracy in term of vocabulary
and grammar in cycle 1 was 75.81 and cycle 2 was 77.77 it was improved 1.96.
Fluency in terms of smoothness and self-confidence in cycle 1 was 76.03 and in
cycle 2 was 78.23 it was improved 2.20. The improvement of mean score in
students’ speaking skill in cycle 1 was 73.58 and in cycle 2 was 78.00 it was
improved 4.42. Based on the data, the implementation of Think-Pair-Share as a
teaching technique in class in cycle 1 and cycle 2 has successfully improved
students’ speaking skills. The results above show that the use of Think-Pair-Share
as a technique in teaching and learning process in class was able to improve
students' speaking skills.
