Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of note-taking strategy used by successful
students in listening tasks. This research used a qualitative descriptive design. The
students of 8th semester of English Education Study Program were the participants of
this research, with total 17 students. Researcher used purposive sampling to choose
the participants by using three criteria of successful students. The instruments used
were document analysis and interview, the participants for both instruments were the
same. Based on the result of the instruments, it was found that majority of the
participants used sentence strategy, outlining strategy and listing strategy.
Furthermore, the result of the interviews revealed some reasons why students used or
not used a specific note-taking strategy. These reasons are related to the ease of using
the strategy, whether or notit is easy to understand the results of the notes and related
to the habits of the students themselves. The interviews also revealed that students
were never taught about the type of note taking strategy in listening class. Therefore,
it may be concluded that the participants have applied the note-taking strategy but it
is suggested that the teacher or lecturer may provide guidance in the form of teaching
material about the types of note-taking strategy.
