Abstract
The objective of this study was to find out the types of questioning strategies applied
in English teaching by 4 English teachers at SMPN 21 Kota Bengkulu. This study
applied mixed method, which is a combination of quantitative and qualitative
methods, data was collected using questionnaires and interviews. The population of
this study was 4 English teachers and 140 eighth grade students, and the samples
were 4 English teachers and 60 eighth grade students. The results of this study
showed that types of questions used by English teachers in teaching English lessons
is display and referential questions as learning strategies, this is in accordance with
the results of the questionnaire, English teachers A and B have similarities in the used
of questioning strategies in the classroom namely 50% for display questions and 50%
for referential questions. This is also supported by the results of interviews with the
English teacher. While the others C and D are likely to use referential questions, this
is in accordance with the results of questionnaire with a frequency of 50%, but on
display questions teachers C and D with a total frequency of 42.8% agree to use
displays and 7.2% disagree with using display questions. Moreover based on
questionnaires to students found that 83% of students prefer to the use of referential
questions. It can be concluded that English teachers at SMPN 21 Kota Bengkulu used
both question strategies in classroom interactions, namely display and referential
questions, only had a slight difference in the frequency of used display and referential
questions. Therefore, for future research, researcher suggest conduct research in
various schools, not just in one school. The researcher also suggest conduct research
on teacher question strategies with a larger number of samples so that the types of
teacher questioning strategies used are more diverse and confirm.
