STUDENTS' MOTIVATION AND GRIT IN LEARNING ENGLISH AT THE 3rd YEAR STUDENTS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BENGKULU

This research raises the issue of motivation and grit, there has been research about
students' motivation. However, there has been limited research on the students'
grit. This study aims to find out the students’ motivation and grit in learning
English. The participants of this study were all students of English Education who
were studying in the 3rd academic year of 2023/2024 at the University of
Bengkulu. The research used a mixed research design. Data were obtained
through questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire consisted of 30
statements which were designed online via the Google form. Then, the researcher
conducted interviews to support the main instrument. This research showed that
(1) The students’ motivation is very high, (2) The students’ grit is very gritty.
Then, it was reinforced from the results of the interviews that English students
were motivated in learning English since English is a subject they liked since
elementary school, and the students feel pleasure when someone speaks English.
Their motivation took this major at the University of Bengkulu since English is a
favorite lesson and also English is an international language. The students'
consistency and persistence in learning English to reach their goals, although they
faced challenges in learning English. From the results obtained in this study, it
was hoped that the students to be consistent in their motivation and grit in learning
English.
