Abstract

This study aims to analyze the categories of illocutionary acts found in
utterances, conversation, expressions, or gesture by Enola Holmes in interpreting the
clues of her mother's disappearance in Enola Holmes 2020 film by using John
Searle's 1969 theory. This study is a descriptive-qualitative research because it
presents the research results by describing the categories of illocutionary acts based
on Enola Holmes' utterances, conversation, expressions, or gesture. The data were
collected from the movie-script and watching Enola Holmes movie to amplify the
utterances in the movie-script. To validate the data, the writer worked with a co-rater
who is an alumnus of the English department. Then the data was calculated using
Cohen's Kappa formula. Four types of illocutionary acts based on John Searle's 1969
theory were found in this study with a total frequency of 66 data. The representative
category shows the results of 29data, the directive category 15 data, the commissive
category 3 data, and the expressive category 19 data. Based on the data above, it can
be concluded that the most frequently used utterances is Representative with
Describing sub-category. Because in her utterances, Enola describes more
explanations and analysis to solve the mystery of her mother's disappearance.
