Abstract
This research discussed the use of code mixing in students' English education
during question-and-answer sessions at proposal seminars. The focus of this research
is on the type of code-mixing and the factors causing code-mixing that influence its
use among students. This study used Musyken theory (2000) to identify the type of
code-mixing and kim theory (2006) to find out the factor causing code-mixing. This
study uses a descriptive method with instruments in the form of a document analysis
checklist and interview. This study used audio transcripts from proposal seminars of
30 students and conducted interviews with 6 students. The research findings show
that two types of code used by students during the question and answer session are
insertion (46 utterances) and alternation (14 utterances), with insertion as the most
dominant type. This study did not find the congruent lexicalization type. Factors that
influence the use of code mixing include limited vocabulary, emotional situation, and
speaking fluency. The researcher hopes that future research can find other types of
code mixing to provide a more comprehensive in a similar context.
