Abstract
This research aim was to explain and classify the types of conversational
implicatures found in ‘Enola Holmes 2’ movie. The method used was a
descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects were all the utterances that
uttered by the main characters in Enola Holmes 2 movie. The main instruments
were instrument of observation, interpretation, and documentation. The
procedures of the research were explained as follow: Downloading movie,
Watching until the end, Taking notes of every conversation contained implicature,
rewatching the movie to make sure if there’s another conversational implicature
form found, Writing a code to each utterance to locate the data easily, Conducting
data reduction, Analyzing and grouping the conversational implicatures:
Generalized and Particularized, Analyzing and elaborating the reason the
conversational implicatures considered as each type of conversational implicature,
and Drawing conclusion of the analysis based on Grice’s theory. The data analysis
process are as follow: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The
study showed that from 36 conversational implicatures found, there were 22 data
categorized as generalized conversational implicatures, and 14 data were
categorized as particularized conversational implicatures. It can be concluded that
in this study two types of conversational implicature were found, namely
generalized conversational implicature type and particularized conversational
implicature type, with the generalized type dominating the utterances. This study
suggests future researchers who want to analyze conversational implicature from
movies to look for the suitable movie genre to analyze the implicature such as
movies with romance or comedy genre which involves lot of conversation in
purpose to get more data.
