Abstract
This research examined the depiction of female characters in Agatha Christie's
novels "4:50 from Paddington" and "Nemesis," highlighting the author's ability to
create diverse and multifaceted protagonists. Through a comparative analysis of the
characters of Lucy Eyelesbarrow and Miss Marple, this research explored
contrasting approaches to detective work, reflecting the changing roles and
perspectives of women in the genre. The presentation of qualitative research data
was descriptive as it focused on providing a detailed description. Lucy
Eyelesbarrow, the action-oriented young investigator in "4:50 from Paddington,"
embodied a modern, practical approach to solving crimes, utilizing her keen
observational skills and logistical expertise. In contrast, Miss Marple from
"Nemesis" represented the classic, introspective detective, whose wisdom and deep
understanding of human nature allowed her to unravel complex mysteries through
empathy and insight. This study explored how these diverse female characters not
only highlighted Christie's thematic richness but also reflected society's changing
perceptions and expectations of women during this period. By presenting varied
and interesting protagonists, the author challenged traditional gender stereotypes
and showed the versatility and importance of female voices in the detective fiction
genre.
