Abstract
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of using spelling bee
games and pictures on students’ vocabulary mastery. This research employed a
quantitative approach that deals with quasi-experimental design. Population of the
study was the seventh grade of SMP N 7 Bengkulu city that consists of 62
students. The researcher used purposive sampling because there are classes that
have the same characteristic and are recommended by teacher. VII B was
implemented by spelling bee game and VII E was taught by pictures media with
visual technique. Furthermore, the pretest, treatments, and posttest procedures
were used to conduct this study. Tests of vocabulary provided the data for
analysis. The data of the test was then calculated by using paired sample t-test and
independent sample t-test in SPSS 25 with significance < 0.05. The t-test was
done by calculating the mean scores between pretest and posttest in both classes
showing that the mean score pretest class B and E is 52.9 and 66.1. Mean score
posttest class B and E is 69.3 and 79.3. The results show that the both classes
experienced an increase. This means that all Ho is rejected and all H1 is accepted.
It is means spelling bee games and using picture has significance effect on
students’ vocabulary mastery at seventh grade of SMP N 7 Bengkulu City. Can be
conclude using pictures is better than the spelling bee game.
