Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out eleventh grade students’ motivation in
learning speaking English at Vocational School 2 Bengkulu City. The design of this
research was descriptive quantitave method. The instrument of the research was
questionnaire adopted from Gardner (2004) namely the Attitude/Motivation Test
Battery (AMTB). There were 30 question of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
(Gardner in Istianti, 2013). The subject of the research was 135 students from
Eleventh Grade at Vocational School 2 Bengkulu City. The result showed that the
students motivation in learning speaking English in eleventh grade at Vocational
School 2 Bengkulu City where most of the students have intrinsic motivation than
extrinsic motivation in learning speaking English. This can be seen from the average
score of intrinsic motivation (73%) which is higher than the average score of extrinsic
motivation (31%). It means they learn English because of their inner desire to be
good at speaking English. In other word, the dominant students motivation in
learning English is intrinsic motivation and the dominant indicator is desire. It is
suggested for the students to improve their motivation because it is very important
when the students learning speaking English, because it can make them enjoy, happy
and interest to learn wether learn from the home or at the school with their friend and
teacher. However, it would be better if it was supported by extrinsic motivation such
as from the students’ parents.
