Abstract
Attracting students and fostering engagement in learning sociolinguistics can be
effectively achieved by leveraging recent events and well-known public figures.
This thesis examines the phenomenon of code-mixing in the 2024 Indonesian
presidential debates, focusing on the speeches of six presidential and vice-
presidential candidates. Code-mixing, the practice of blending elements from two
or more languages within a single utterance, is a significant sociolinguistic
phenomenon in multilingual societies. Using Muysken's typology and Marasigan's
functional approach, this research aims to identify the dominant types and
functions of code mixing in the debate transcripts. Data were collected from five
debate segments held between December 2023 and February 2024, encompassing
vision-mission speeches and closing statements. The analysis reveals that the
insertion type of code-mixing is the most prevalent, reflecting candidates' need to
communicate effectively to a diverse audience. The facility of expressions
function is the dominant function for code-mixing, indicating a strategic use of
familiar terms to convey messages fluently. In conclusion, the use of code-mixing
in these debate speeches appears to be a deliberate effort to resonate with and win
the support of the Indonesian populace.
