Abstract

This descriptive research was aimed to get the description of the degree of relevance
of the English materials in the textbooks “English on Sky” with the 2004 English
curriculum for the SMP. The subjects of this research were the textbooks “English on
Sky” for the first, second, and third grades (Mukarto et al, 2004) and published by
Erlangga. The curriculum 2004 was the guidance in analyzing the materials in the
textbooks. Data was gathered through checklist. To get more valid data/the researcher
was helped by Co-researcher. The collected data was analyzed based on the
categories of ‘Available’ and ‘Unavailable’ in comparison with the materials in
curriculum that were included in the textbooks. The result of this research showed
that The English materials in curriculum for the first grade were 66,67% available
and 33,33% unavailable in the English textbook ‘English on Sky 1’. The English
materials in curriculum for the second grade were 72,41% available and 27,59%
unavailable in the English textbooks ‘English on Sky 2’. While the English materials
in curriculum for the third grade were 70,59% available and 29,41% unavailable in
the textbook ‘English on Sky 3’. The researcher concluded that all the English
materials in the texbook ‘English on Sky’ had a high degree of relevance to the
materials in 2004 English curriculum for the SMP.
