Abstract

The Hello English application is a kids-friendly learning media to support beginner
students at SDN 63 in learning English vocabulary. This study aimed to reveal
students' attitudes and identified factors that influence vocabulary learning through
Hello English. This study used a Qualitative approach. Data were collected through
an observation checklist during four meetings with 17 students and semi-structured
interviews were conducted with 8 students of fifth and sixth grade classes of
elementary school Number 63 Bengkulu Tengah. The analysis of data followed the
Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) model to ensure rigorous and systematic
interpretation. The results showed that students had positive attitudes towards
vocabulary learning through the Hello English application, as reflected in the three
components of Azwar's (2022) attitude theory: Cognitive (89%), Affective (96%),
and Conative (93%). Four factors were identified to influence students' attitudes:
personal experience, emotional factors, the influence of others, and educational
institutions. In contrast, mass media and cultural factors were not found to have a
significant impact. This study highlights the Hello English application as an
effective media to improve vocabulary knowledge and provide an engaging and
interactive learning experience. However, the limited sample size and scope of this
study create gaps, as the findings cannot be fully generalized. Future studies are
encouraged to involve a wider population with longer observations and include
teacher interviews to gain deeper insights into classroom conditions and student
attitudes.
